New Book Offers Practical Tips for Success in College

Everyone wants to be successful in college—right? According to Hyde Schools President Malcolm Gauld, anyone can be with the right attitude and by following three simple steps he outlines in his new book, Show up, Study, and Serve — College Survival Guaranteed.

The book, which originated from a 45-minute talk Gauld delivers every spring to college-bound seniors, includes parameters describing what the book is versus what it isn’t, the number of hours students need to surrender per week, as well as the three “rules” to follow for achieving success in college.

Gauld writes: “In large part, the book has been inspired by the looks on the faces of the students I have watched return to visit their alma maters after their first year of college. Some glow like vibrant, conquering heroes, while others look and feel pretty bummed out. This book aspires to increase the number in the first group and decrease the number in the second group.”

Though the book was written with high school seniors in mind, (Note the subtitle: Old School Wisdom for New School Attention Spans.), it’s likely it will attract hopeful parents and grandparents who are looking for ways to drive home to their college-bound students the importance of getting the high-priced post-secondary job done right.

1. Rule #1: Go to Class, (i.e., Show Up), which Gauld says is “the most critical” advice.
2. Rule #2: 3 X 5 = 15. Study 3 Hours X 5 days per week. This tip is based on perception—transitioning to a mindset of seeing study as a time commitment as opposed to assignment completion. The chapter explains how.
3. Rule #3: Serve Somebody. Although this rule is counter-intuitive, “too much idle time often leads to the devil’s playground.”
